About Nicola Mendelsohn

Nicola Mendelsohn has over 20 years’ experience in advertising, marketing and technology and was appointed Vice President for Europe, the Middle East and Africa for Facebook in June 2013.

Currently, she is the co-chair of the Creative Industries Council alongside Secretaries of State for DCMS and BIS – a joint forum between the UK creative industries and government – and last year launched its 2020 vision and strategy. In addition, Nicola is a Director of the Women’s Prize for Fiction, and, in September 2014, she also became a non-executive director of Diageo.

In 2015 she was awarded a Commander of the British Empire (CBE) for services to the creative industries here in the UK.

Born in Manchester, Nicola was educated at Manchester High School for Girls. She went on to read English and Theatre Studies at the University of Leeds and graduated with a bachelor’s degree.

Upon graduation, Nicola was selected to join a graduate training scheme at Bartle Bogle Hegarty (BBH), one of Britain’s most famous creative agencies, where she worked from September 1992 to January 2004, advancing to Business Development Director. In April 2004 she became Deputy Chairman of Grey London, serving in that capacity until December 2007. She was also European Business Development Director for the Grey Communications Group from 2004 to 2008. In April 2008 she became partner and executive chairman at independently owned British advertising agency, Karmarama.

In 2013 she was hired as Facebook Vice President for EMEA. In her role, Nicola is responsible for all operations across the region, with a particular focus on developing digital marketing solutions and strengthening relationships with the marketing and advertising communities – a key pillar of Facebook’s revenue globally. Nicola also leads Facebook’s focus on developing resources for fast-developing markets within EMEA.

Away from Facebook, Nicola has previously held the role of president of the IPA (the advertising industry trade body) – the first woman president in its 96 year history. She is also a former Trustee of The White Ribbon Alliance, Chairman of Women’s Aid Development Board (a post she held for five years) and former President of the Women in Advertising and Communications London club (WACL).

Her greatest joy in life comes from her husband Jon and her four children Gabi, Danny, Sam and Zac.

Previous Work Experience

Prior to joining Forrester Research, James was the senior professional services global director at SDL with global responsibility for the delivery of multichannel campaign management and analytics (CMA) enablement programs and solutions to multiple verticals. During his stint at SDL, he also managed teams to deliver web content management (WCM) solutions.

Past responsibilities include the delivery of web experience management, eCommerce, and customer-location analytics-based solutions to a number of verticals including retail, telco, insurance, gaming, automotive, and financial services.

Education

James graduated from the University of Cape Town, South Africa, with a B.Sc. in geology. He followed this up with a B.Eng. (honors) degree in geographic information systems (GIS).

About Elaine Smith

I manage risk, processes and systems for Standard Life Assurance marketing and provide system support to Standard Life Investments. I’m also responsible for image management and use the marketing operations system to support this. I have over 400 users of the marketing operations system and am actively involved in training and development. I have worked for Standard Life for 15 years – 10 of which have been spent in the marketing department. I’ve transitioned from a traditional marketer creating and updating assets to a marketing technologist supporting marketers in the use of systems and processes. Outside of work I enjoy travel and (watching) sport. I swim regularly and try and work out in the gym too but not as frequently as I should. I’m married and have two sons –both keen golfers with one now playing mini-tour golf in the States thanks to sponsorship from the Bank of Mum and Dad. About Christian Howes

A social media expert with over 15 years of experience in digital, Christian works with some of the biggest platforms and programmes on TV, taking social media data and making it into relevant, interesting and engaging content for audiences. Now using his expertise on The Hub for This Morning and BT Sport, Christian began peeking at the social media habits of reality TV viewers in 2009 as they discussed the goings on in the Big Brother house. So interesting were his findings that he was given a regular weekly spot on Big Brother’s Bit on the Side to discuss his findings on Twitter around the show, along with appearing on the National Lottery on BBC1 in a similar role.

Christian has since gone on to help numerous production companies develop ideas and formats around integrating social date into programmes, and is currently actively involved in bringing to air new series that merge modern data with traditional genres. This work in exposing data to audiences in an engaging way has enabled Christian to work with many top brands including Asos, Barclays, HSBC, Lloyds, Playstation and Telegraph, and has made him a sought-after speaker at many conferences around the world.

When not staring intensely at a laptop screen or a Venn diagram, he can be found running around a football pitch, BBQ-ing or trawling the internet for interesting stuff (though not all at the same time).
